今週のHSの収録は10月15日（水）、RyutaさんはTokyoから、MugikoはKyotoから参加しました。Part1ではKanaさんから共同展示会のお知らせ、Part2ではUC IMC25周年のイベント紹介、Part3ではUCIMCのDanielleさんのインタビュー（2012)をお届けします。

Part1, MOONSTONE:Kanaさんからグループ展のお知らせ @ Kyoto

グループ展「MOON STONE」

Kanaです。秋のグループ展を、京都・岡崎で開催します。

日時：2025年10月28日(火)〜11月2日(日)　時間：10:30〜17:00 会場：アートギャラリー百継(京都市バス「岡崎道」バス停より徒歩すぐ)＊入場無料、お車でお越しの際は、近隣のコインパーキングなどをご利用ください。

今回は9人での展示ということで、9文字の石の名前を探し、展覧会名を「MOONLIGHT」と付けました。ギャラリー百継さんも、和風な柱と白壁がクールな、とても素敵なところです。ぜひお立ち寄りください。-Kana

Part2,UCIMC って何だ？25周年記念イベント

UCIMC設立と市民の寄付による建物購入、移転

UCIMC（Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center)は、Urbanaのダウンタウン中心部にあるNPO[501(c)]のメディアセンターです。1999年にシアトルでの世界貿易機関（WTO)閣僚会議の開催中に、商業メディアとは異なる「オルタナティブな」報道機関としてIMCが設立され、全米、海外にもこの運動が広がり、Indymediaネットワークが形成されました。UCIMCも、シアトルでの抗議デモの参加者が呼びかけ、2000年に設立されました。人々からの寄付を募り、Urbanaの郵便局本部移転後の建物を購入して、UCIMCは2005年に現在の場所へ移りました。

Art + Media + Tech=Social Change

UCIMC サイトには、「 Art + Media + Tech=Social Change」と記されています。誰でも自由に表現し、それをさまざまな媒体をとおして伝え、そのためのスキルや場所や機会を共有し、社会を変えてゆこうとする想いが込められている言葉なのかなと思います。

UCIMCは特定の目的に突き進む一つの組織というよりも、多様な組織、活動が関わり合う可変的な運動体です。建物の１階の一部は郵便局が使用し、またイベント会場やラジオ局スタジオなどがあります。地下と2階の複数の部屋を貸し出し、数々の活動の拠点となっています（IMC Projects)。RyutaさんがUIUC在籍中には、イリノイ大学の大学院生労働組合（Graduate Employees’s Organization at UIUC）のインベントなども開催されていたそうです。

UCIMCのワーキンググループ：多彩なメディア活動

UCIMCのワーキンググループも多彩です。Public iは、地域や国内外の社会問題を鋭く伝えるニュースレターを定期的に発行しています。UC Books to Prisoners は、住民からの寄付された本を刑務所に送っています。Makerspace Urbanaは、まざまな技術と知識を共有し、DIYなものづくりの創造的な場所と機会、そしてスキルを提供しています。Zine Libraryでは、Radical Librarianたちが地域のZineを収集、またZineのワークショップを開催しています。そしてWRFUは、2005年に開局した低出力(100W)のコミュニティラジオ局です。

25-Year Anniversary Celebration & Open House @ UCIMC

このUCIMC25周年記念イベントが2025年10月24日〜26日に開催されます（詳細はこちら）。一部は CU Pride Festと連携しています。24日（金）4:30pm-6:00pmにはZineのワークショップ、9m-11pmにはIMC’s Drag Show、25日（土）午後には、UCIMCのopen houseや、設立に関わった人々と活動を紹介やUCIMCのルーツを辿るイベント、夜には軽食パーティや音楽ライブが続きます。26日（日）には、10am-2pmに25年にわたるIndymediaの展開をたどります。何を今、あえて言葉やかたちにして共有し、未来に繋ぐのか。草の根の活動の意味が、2025年現在の厳しい状況下で問われています。

Part3, コミュニティメディアとしてのUCIMC・WRFU-Danielle (2012)

このインタビューは、2012年8月17日（金）のHS(HS No. 73)の番組のなかで行われました。当時のHSは、毎週金曜日6pm-7pmにスタジオからの生放送をしていました。その日は、機材担当はTomさん、ホストはRyutaさんとMugikoでした。ゲストのDanielleさんは、UCIMCの創設者の一人で、また2005年11月のWRFUの開局にも深く関わり、その後もUCIMCの中心メンバーです。2001年から2008年まで、Urbanaの市議会議員でした。Danielleさんは、U-Cにおいては市民活動と行政と大学をつなぐキーパーソンとして今日まで活躍されています。

2012年、Grassroots Media運動とUCIMCとWRFUの節目

また2012年7月には、UCIMCでGrassroots Radio Conferenceが開催され、Danielleさんは運営員委員の一人でした。新しいLocal Community Radio Act（2010年12月28日成立）のもとでは、都市部でも低出力ラジオ局の開設が認められ、2012年には申請受付が行われました。WRFUにおいては、2012年11月に65フィートの電波塔が100フィートに建て替えられる準備が進められていました。草の根メディア運動においても、WRFUにとってもまさに節目の年に、DanielleさんにUCIMCとWRFUの設立、開局の経緯と、それがアメリカのコミュニティメディアのめぐる市民運動の歴史とどう関わっているのかについて、お話を伺っています。

Write or Wrong, My Desires: Writing and Zine Making Workshop

Led by Dr. Meadow Jones and the School for Designing a Society

4:30-6pm (Online & In Person)

Who’s this for?

• Those interested in writing, desiring, and zines – we will be making all of these!

• Folks who want to learn about the School for Designing a Society (SDAS) and the role it played in shaping the IMC.

• Those with connections to the School for Designing a Society (SDAS) and the IMC are invited to bring historical material from these to work with.

All are invited to kick off our 25th Anniversary with creative making! Join literary artist, trauma expert and facilitator Meadow Jones to write with our desires, explore our histories and make a zine together. The workshop will cultivate a sense of community among participants, enhancing the creative process and helping us connect across generations. You will leave with a piece of writing and are welcome to add to a collective zine that will be finished at Sunday’s 10am session to share with the group.

Acknowledgments Ceremony 4-4:30pm (Online & In Person)

We welcome everyone to participate and join us in song, a collective breath, and the naming of those whose work has shaped us. At our 25th Anniversary, we make explicit our practice of gratitude through this Acknowledgement Ceremony. We will present a plaque of our founders and lifetime members. We will also honor Belden Fields, a new ancestor, who we will be adding to our Activist Mural.

Panel: Strong Roots, Rich Soil: Cultural Organizing to Grow Our Movements 4:30-6pm  (Online & In Person) 

Cultural organizing invites us to integrate art and culture into our strategies for social change. We’ll ask our panel of local leaders how their cultural roots inform their work and why we need cultural organizing to grow our movements. Panelists include Danielle Chynoweth, one of IMC’s founders, whose forthcoming book Remaking Democracy: How We Make the Worlds We Want features the IMC and several projects that took root in our space.

Introduction to Indymedia: Storytelling and Collage (with Free Brunch) 10am  (Online & In Person)

Hosted by: Marisa Hicks-Alcaraz (UCIMC and Makerspace Urbana Memory Lab) and Danielle Chynoweth (IMC and Remaking Democracy)

• Learn about Indymedia history or remix your own Indymedia materials

• Explore creative collage and mixed-media storytelling techniques.

• Experiment with archival and found materials to tell a story about the IMC.

• Try out Makerspace tools, including our button maker, to craft unique keepsakes

Join us for a hands-on archival storytelling and collage workshop that celebrates the history and spirit of Indymedia. This session is both for new and experienced folks interested in Indymedia!

Together, we’ll reflect on the legacy of Indymedia and our IMC, foster intergenerational connections, and create new narratives from archival materials and personal memories. Participants will have the opportunity to make a piece to display in the gallery or take home. If you have them, please bring archival materials from your connection to Indymedia, media democracy, media justice, zines, or DIY journalism. The Makerspace will also be stocked with a variety of paper, scrapbooking, and craft supplies. (If you’d prefer not to use originals, photocopies of 2D materials can be made on-site.)

Panel Discussion: Independent Presses Against the AI Machine 12pm (Online & In Person)

Independent, non profit and movement publications have always played a vital role to amplify the voices drowned out or disappeared by corporate presses. With the dawning of AI and social media echo chambers, our work to promote critical and independent thought is even more pressing (pun intended). This panel gathers independent publishers from NYC to Philly to Urbana to discuss the vital role of print in the era of mass surveillance and alienation. There will be a remote option for participants.
